Paste the YouTube video link into the box. Full links, short youtu.be links and links with timestamps all work.
Click Get Thumbnail. The tool reads the video ID from the link and shows the available sizes.
Download the resolution you need; the HD version is the one to use for print or large displays.
When to use it
Creators use it to recover a thumbnail whose source file was lost, to build a consistent channel gallery, or to check how a thumbnail looks at full size. Marketers use it to preview a video in a newsletter or slide with a click-through link, since email cannot embed video. Teachers and researchers use it to reference a video in a document.
How the sizes work
YouTube stores several renditions of every thumbnail and serves them from the same public image address, built from the video ID; the tool reads the ID out of whatever link you paste and lists the renditions it can find. The largest is 1280 × 720 pixels and exists only when the uploader provided a high-resolution image; below it are 640 × 480 (with black bars, because it is a 4:3 frame), 480 × 360 and 320 × 180. If the largest size is missing, the video was uploaded with a small thumbnail and there is no bigger copy to fetch.
Worked example
A creator lost the source file for a thumbnail that performed well and wants to reuse the layout: paste the link, download the 1280 × 720 version, open it in the editor as the reference. A channel manager building a gallery of the last twelve uploads for a sponsor deck: twelve links, twelve downloads at the same size, dropped into the deck at equal dimensions. A podcaster checking whether a guest's episode used the agreed artwork: paste, look, done.
Common mistakes
Downloading the 640 × 480 version for a 16:9 use. It carries black bars. Use 1280 × 720 or 320 × 180, which are 16:9.
Using someone else's thumbnail. The image belongs to its creator. Downloading for reference or your own channel is fine; republishing is not.
Private or deleted videos. No thumbnail is served; the link is not wrong, the video is unavailable.
Playlist links. Paste the video link, not the playlist.
When this tool is the wrong one
It fetches an existing image. It does not download the video, does not make a thumbnail, and cannot enlarge a small one. To check how your own thumbnail will be cropped and covered before uploading, the Thumbnail Safe Zone Preview; to resize or convert what you downloaded, the Bulk Image Resizer.
Good to know
Thumbnails belong to the channel that made them; use them for reference, previews and commentary, and ask before reusing someone else's as your own artwork. Only the video ID is sent to YouTube's image server to fetch the picture; nothing else about you is shared.
How do I download a YouTube video's thumbnail in HD?
Paste the YouTube video URL into the Thumbnail Downloader and it fetches the highest-resolution thumbnail available (up to 1080p/Max Res) for you to save.
Is there a free tool to grab a YouTube cover photo without watermarks?
Yes, thumbnails download exactly as YouTube stores them, with no watermark added.
Does this work for any public YouTube video?
Yes, as long as the video is public and has a thumbnail set, you can pull it by pasting the video link.
