15% Off: sale price, savings and the reverse calculation
At 15% off, multiply the original price by 0.85 to get the sale price. $39.99 becomes $33.99. Everything else on this page is that one multiplication applied to the prices people actually see.

How the discount is calculated
saving = original × 15/100
Two ways to reach the same number. Subtract: $39.99 minus 15% of $39.99 ($6.00) is $33.99. Multiply: $39.99 × 0.85 is $33.99. The multiplication is faster for a whole list of prices.

A second discount on top of 15%
Stacked discounts do not add up. 15% off followed by a further 10% off is not 25% off; the second discount applies to the already reduced price, so the combined discount is 23.5%. On $39.99: $33.99 after the first discount, then $30.59 after the second.

| 15% then 15% more | 27.8% | $28.89 | 30% |

Reverse: from the sale price back to the original
Reverse check: $33.99 is what remains after 15% off, so the full price was $33.99 ÷ 0.85 = $39.99. Use this when a receipt shows only the discounted amount and you need the list price for a return or a claim.
Mental math for 15%
Sellers should read this discount against their margin. At 15% off, a line priced at a 60% gross margin still keeps 52.9% of the sale price; a line at a 30% margin keeps 17.6%, which may be less than its overheads.
