Reverse: from the sale price back to the original
Going backwards: if the sale price is $78.00 after 35% off, the original was $78.00 ÷ 0.65 = $120.00. Dividing by 0.65, not multiplying by 1.35, is the step people get wrong.
Mental math for 35%
Sellers should read this discount against their margin. At 35% off, a line priced at a 60% gross margin still keeps 38.5% of the sale price; a line at a 30% margin keeps 0%, which may be less than its overheads.
