30% Off: sale price, savings and the reverse calculation

30% off means you pay 70% of the original price. On a $89.50 item the saving is $26.85 and the sale price is $62.65. The table below covers the common price points, and the calculator handles any amount.

How the discount is calculated

sale price = original × (1 − 30/100) = original × 0.7
saving = original × 30/100

Sale price = original × (1 − 30/100). For $89.50: $89.50 × 0.7 = $62.65. The saving is the difference, $26.85, or original × 30/100 directly.

A second discount on top of 30%

If a coupon for 25% is applied after the 30% sale discount, the customer pays 0.7 × 0.75 of the original, an effective 47.5% off rather than 55%. The table shows every combination for the usual coupon sizes.

Reverse: from the sale price back to the original

Going backwards: if the sale price is $62.65 after 30% off, the original was $62.65 ÷ 0.7 = $89.50. Dividing by 0.7, not multiplying by 1.30, is the step people get wrong.

Mental math for 30%

Thirty percent is three times ten percent. On a $150 item: 10% is $15, three of those is $45 off, so the sale price is $105.

Sellers should read this discount against their margin. At 30% off, a line priced at a 60% gross margin still keeps 42.9% of the sale price; a line at a 30% margin keeps 0%, which may be less than its overheads.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate 30% off quickly?

Multiply the price by 0.7. 30% off means paying 70% of the price, so $89.50 × 0.7 = $62.65.

If something is $62.65 after 30% off, what was the original price?

$89.50. Divide the sale price by 0.7: $62.65 ÷ 0.7 = $89.50.

Is 30% off plus 25% off the same as 55% off?

No. The second discount applies to the reduced price, so the total is 47.5% off. On $89.50 the final price is $46.99, not $40.27.
