25% Off: sale price, savings and the reverse calculation

25% off means you pay 75% of the original price. On a $79.00 item the saving is $19.75 and the sale price is $59.25. The table below covers the common price points, and the calculator handles any amount.

How the discount is calculated

sale price = original × (1 − 25/100) = original × 0.75
saving = original × 25/100

The arithmetic for a 25% discount: saving = price × 0.25; sale price = price − saving. On $79.00 the saving is $19.75 and the sale price is $59.25. For a quick estimate round the price first, then apply 25%.

A second discount on top of 25%

Stacked discounts do not add up. 25% off followed by a further 20% off is not 45% off; the second discount applies to the already reduced price, so the combined discount is 40%. On $79.00: $59.25 after the first discount, then $47.40 after the second.

Reverse: from the sale price back to the original

Going backwards: if the sale price is $59.25 after 25% off, the original was $59.25 ÷ 0.75 = $79.00. Dividing by 0.75, not multiplying by 1.25, is the step people get wrong.

Mental math for 25%

A quarter off: divide the price by four and subtract that amount. On a $120 item you save $30 and pay $90. It is also the discount that turns a 33.3% markup back into cost.

For a seller, 25% off is only safe if the gross margin is above 25%. A product with a 25% margin sells at cost at this discount; a product with a 50% margin keeps 33.3% of the sale price after a 25% markdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

If something is $59.25 after 25% off, what was the original price?

$79.00. Divide the sale price by 0.75: $59.25 ÷ 0.75 = $79.00.

Is 25% off plus 20% off the same as 45% off?

No. The second discount applies to the reduced price, so the total is 40% off. On $79.00 the final price is $47.40, not $43.45.

What percentage do I pay at 25% off?

75%. The discount and the amount paid always add up to 100%, so 25% off leaves 75% to pay.
