70% Off: sale price, savings and the reverse calculation
70% off is the same as paying 30 cents on the dollar. A $520.00 price drops to $156.00, saving $364.00. Below: a price table, the stacked-discount table, the reverse calculation and the mental-math shortcut for 70%.

How the discount is calculated
saving = original × 70/100
Two ways to reach the same number. Subtract: $520.00 minus 70% of $520.00 ($364.00) is $156.00. Multiply: $520.00 × 0.3 is $156.00. The multiplication is faster for a whole list of prices.

A second discount on top of 70%
Stacked discounts do not add up. 70% off followed by a further 15% off is not 85% off; the second discount applies to the already reduced price, so the combined discount is 74.5%. On $520.00: $156.00 after the first discount, then $132.60 after the second.
| Discounts applied | Effective discount | Final price on $520.00 | Not |
|---|---|---|---|
| 70% then 5% more | 71.5% | $148.20 | 75% |
| 70% then 10% more | 73% | $140.40 | 80% |
| 70% then 15% more | 74.5% | $132.60 | 85% |
| 70% then 20% more | 76% | $124.80 | 90% |
| 70% then 25% more | 77.5% | $117.00 | 95% |
Reverse: from the sale price back to the original
Going backwards: if the sale price is $156.00 after 70% off, the original was $156.00 ÷ 0.3 = $520.00. Dividing by 0.3, not multiplying by 1.70, is the step people get wrong.
Mental math for 70%
For a seller, 70% off is deeper than most gross margins: any product with a margin below 70% sells at a loss at this discount, and a product bought at keystone (50% margin) loses 20% of its cost on every unit. Use the Profit Margin Calculator to check the line before running the promotion.
