Percent-Off Discount Table (5% to 95%)

One grid for every sale sign. Rows are the discount, columns are common ticket prices, cells are what you pay. The multiplier column is the fastest way to apply a discount to a whole price list in a spreadsheet.

What you pay after the discount

To read the grid, find the discount on the left and the original price along the top; the cell is the sale price. To apply a discount to any other price, multiply by the number in the multiplier column: 30% off is × 0.70, 65% off is × 0.35.

Reading a sale sign against your margin

Shoppers read the grid one way: the discount is the saving. Sellers should read it the other way: the discount is margin given up. A line bought at a 40% gross margin keeps 40% of its price at full price, 25% of the reduced price at 20% off, and nothing at 40% off, where the sale price equals cost. Every row below 50% off still leaves something for a keystone retailer; every row at 50% or deeper does not. Use the percent-off pages, which carry the margin arithmetic for each level, before printing the sign.

Three things the grid does not show

Stacked discounts multiply rather than add: 20% off then 10% off is 28% off, not 30%. Each percent-off page has the stacked table for that starting discount. Reverse calculations divide rather than subtract: a $70 sale price after 30% off was $100 (70 ÷ 0.70), not $91. And a discount deeper than the gross margin sells below cost; the pricing hub links the margin pages that show where that line is for each markup.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply a percentage discount to a whole price list?

Multiply every price by (1 − discount/100). For 25% off that is × 0.75; the multiplier column in the table gives the factor for every 5% step.

Do two discounts add together?

No. A second discount applies to the already reduced price, so 20% then 10% is 28% off in total, and 50% then 50% is 75% off, not free.

How deep can a discount go before the seller loses money?

Only as deep as the gross margin. A product with a 40% margin sells at cost at 40% off; anything deeper is a loss on every unit.
